The United Benefice of Batley was created in 2016 to bring together four Church of England churches which serve the town of Batley and the village of Hanging Heaton: All Saints Batley, St Thomas’ Batley, St Andrew’s Purlwell and St Paul’s Hanging Heaton. We exist to love God, to proclaim the good news of Jesus Christ, and to serve our communities.

Our churches each retain their own identity, but work together. We are always happy to welcome you to our church services; to funerals, christenings and weddings; and to our events.

All Saints Batley

All Saints’ Church is Batley’s only medieval building. There has been a church on this site since before the 1086 Domesday Book. The current building mostly dates from 1485, with a south arcade dating from 1330. All Saints’ Church is open daily from 8:45am to 9:15am for morning prayer and also hosts Batley Community Choir on Monday evening at 7:30pm.

St Thomas’ Batley

St Thomas’ Church was known as “Batley’s Cathedral” when it constructed in 1867-8 to serve the wealthy families of Upper Batley, and was designed by local architect Walter Hanstock. Today St Thomas is a busy community hub. We host a Monday Club at 2pm every week for tea, coffee, crafts and socialising, as well as a prayer group on Friday at 11am. We also host Scouting & Girlguiding groups.

St Paul’s Hanging Heaton

St Paul’s Church was constructed in 1823-24 as a new ‘Commissioners’ Church’ to serve a rapidly growing area. It was rebuilt after a devastating fire in 1916. St Paul’s hosts a Monday Club every Monday at 1pm for games, conversation, coffee and cake. It also holds a luncheon club for older people every other Tuesday (please get in touch to lean more). St Paul’s Hall is open for community events all throught the week.

St Andrew’s Purlwell

St Andrew’s was built in the early twentieth century to serve the community of Purlwell and Mount Pleasant. It continues to be an active church serving the community, and also has a busy church hall attached. St Andrew’s also run a group for the over 60s on Friday afternoons.
